I’m not happy about this. Lately I’ve been wildly careening visually from comic to comic, and it’s driving me crazy. Recently I’ve committed to too many personal projects, as well as a Superfogeys: Origin story, all of which take up a fair bit of my time. Bullfinch isn’t some four panel gag strip with a dog or a stay at home dog getting into brief hijinks. It encompasses a lot of story ideas and characters who need lots of space. I put a lot of work into my comic and I want it to be as strong artistically as it can be. So when I find myself rushing to finish everything my work suffers. It’s not fair to me and it’s not fair to my readers, but it happens and it stresses me out.
Taking a few weeks off will allow me to finish things I committed to and allow me some time to experiment on other types of art as well. It will also let me get Bullfinch back on track both story-wise and artistically. I’ve got some big plans coming up and I really want them to feel thought out and fluid. For someone like me who isn’t the most experienced writer I would like the time to get some scripts written and some broad outlines so things go where and when the should go.
I also want to be able to blog more and keep my website up to date. By building a bit of a buffer and talking about my art more I’m hoping to add a little life to my site, outside of the three comics a week.
The bottom line is that I am certainly not giving up on comics and Bullfinch isn’t going away. I’m taking a break to make Bullfinch stronger and better than ever!
Thanks for your patience guys! It’ll be worth it.

This is partially a make-up comic for Friday and partially a make-up for the cruddy job I did on Oscar and 42’s last comic. I struggle constantly with what I want to portray as an artist and what I need to show as a writer. Then there’s the biggest hurdle which is time to do all of this in. Lately I’ve been toying with the idea of doing less updates but full page comics like my work over at Superfogeys. The main reason is it allows me to do basic comic story-telling features like establishing shots, close ups, and other special effects. In my last update I ran out of room at the end, it should have been a cool close up of 42’s arm transforming into gun form. Instead it was a small panel with a few sound effects.
I’m not making any decisions yet. But I am trying to work on less projects at one time! So far unsuccessfully….
