The original Nintendo broke. That was the only thing that stopped us from still playing Tecmo Super Bowl. Not when we were 13 either. I’m talking about 2006. We were still keeping records and playing through whole seasons competitively. We briefly tried the Super Nintendo version, but we had borrowed the console and it eventually went back to its owner. Luckily we stumbled on a Sega Genesis.
Now being a longtime Nintendo guy I never played Sega Genesis. In fact when you were a teenager and into video-games and the proud owner of every Nintendo you instinctively hated Sega and it’s stupid blue mascot Sonic. Don’t think for a minute those Sega heads didn’t hate us and our beloved Mario, it was always a cold war.
Tecmo Super Bowl bridges all gaps and heals all wounds, as I found out. It’s as simple and fun as ever. The version we have is during Favre’s first year in Green Bay, right after they had gotten rid of Majkowski (see screenshot). So there are a couple of personnel tweaks. Barry Sanders still lights it up in Detroit, and Phil Simms is still in charge in New York. Minnesota is still as dreadful as ever, you’ll be comforted to know.
